Interior-only work usually goes ahead. Light rain does not affect it, particularly in a garage or covered lot.
Exterior work, paint correction and ceramic coating do not. For those we watch the forecast and reach out to reschedule before the appointment rather than turning up and producing a compromised job. Rescheduling for weather carries no penalty.
This comes up constantly here between roughly November and March, and it is worth knowing how we handle it before you book.
| Service | Light rain | Steady rain | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interior detail | Usually goes ahead | Goes ahead if there is cover | The work is inside the car. Getting in and out in the wet is the only issue. |
| Exterior wash & protection | We will contact you | Reschedule | Protection needs a dry surface to bond to and dry weather to cure. |
| Decontamination and clay | We will contact you | Reschedule | Part of an exterior job, and it leaves bare paint that needs protecting the same day. |
| Paint correction | Reschedule | Reschedule | Polishing needs a dry, controlled surface, and corrected paint must be protected before it gets wet. |
| Ceramic coating | Reschedule | Reschedule | The car must stay dry for 24 to 48 hours after application. This is the least negotiable one. |
Covered parking changes several of these rows. If you have a garage or a covered lot, tell us — an appointment that would otherwise move can often go ahead.
A ceramic coating is applied as a liquid and cures into a hard bonded layer. The first 24 to 48 hours are when that bond forms, and water landing on it during that window can leave permanent marks in the coating or compromise the bond outright.
That is not a preference, it is chemistry, and it is why a coating in San Francisco gets planned around the forecast rather than simply booked into the next free slot. The install alone is 7 to 8 hours or more, and with correction first it is a two-day job, so we are looking for a stretch of dry weather rather than a dry morning.
The single most useful thing you can offer is covered parking for the first day. A residential garage, a covered apartment lot or an office parking structure takes the weather risk out of the equation completely, and it turns a coating from a forecast-dependent plan into a straightforward booking.
If you do not have that, we plan the dates with you around a clear window. We would rather move a date twice than apply a coating into weather it cannot cure in.
San Francisco produces a lot of days that are not raining and are not dry either. Fog heavy enough to wet the panels behaves like very light rain for anything that needs a dry surface, and it can persist all day in the Sunset and the Richmond while the Mission is in sun.
For an exterior wash, fog is usually manageable — we dry the car by hand anyway. For a coating cure window, panel-wetting fog counts as wet, and we treat it that way.
Fog also affects drying time inside the car. A heavily extracted interior in the outer neighborhoods on a foggy winter day can want most of the day with the windows cracked. That is a scheduling consideration rather than a cancellation one, and it is why we try to put extraction jobs earlier in the day.
The practical upshot: when we discuss timing, we are looking at your specific microclimate rather than at a citywide forecast. The neighborhood genuinely matters here in a way it does not in most cities.
Between November and March we build flexibility into how exterior appointments are scheduled, and a large share of our documented jobs were done in exactly those months. It works because we move dates rather than force them.
If you are booking a coating or correction in winter, tell us up front whether you have covered parking. That one answer changes the whole plan.
