⚠ Paint Defects Locked In
Swirl marks, water spots, and light scratches live in the clear coat, above the actual paint. Machine polishing removes the damaged layer and reveals the undamaged paint below. Not a wax. Not a fill. A real correction.

Paint defects in the clear coat almost always come from contact, either the wrong wash method or years of environmental exposure.
The single largest source of swirl marks on Bay Area vehicles. Brushes pick up grit from previous cars and drag it across your clear coat in circular arcs. A few visits creates thousands of micro-scratches that scatter light and kill gloss.
Dirty sponges, circular scrubbing motions, and rough drying towels all introduce swirl marks. These are wash-induced defects that accumulate with every incorrect wash cycle.
Water spots from mineral-heavy tap water or sprinkler systems etch into the clear coat if left to dry. Bird droppings and tree sap contain acids that etch within hours in direct sun. These become permanent if not addressed quickly.
A swirled car looks dull no matter how clean it is. Corrected paint gives back a sharp reflection instead of a hazy one, and direct sun is where you see the difference.
Swirl marks scatter light instead of reflecting it cleanly. Removing them lets the paint throw a sharp, high-contrast reflection again.
Paint is one of the first things a buyer looks at, and swirls and water spots read as a car that was not looked after. Correcting before you list it is cheap next to what the paint is telling people.
Ceramic coating locks in whatever condition the paint is in at application. Correct the paint first and the coating seals a clean surface instead of sealing the swirls in for the next few years.
The right pad and compound for the defect type, controlled passes until the defect is gone, then a refining pass for gloss.
Iron decontamination, clay bar, and full wash before any polishing begins. Polishing over contaminated paint embeds particles and creates additional marring.
We measure paint thickness across panels before cutting. This tells us how much clear coat we have to work with and prevents cutting through on thinner panels.
Panel by panel machine polishing with the appropriate compound and pad for the defect type. Heavy defects start with a cut compound; finish polishing refines the surface to high gloss.
Isopropyl alcohol wipedown removes polishing oils so we can inspect the actual paint surface under LED lighting. Any remaining defects get another pass before finishing.
A black M3 Competition in the Outer Sunset. On top of a full interior and exterior detail, the paint got one machine polishing pass and then a two-year Gtechniq EXO v5 ceramic coating. One pass, one stage — the single-stage level described below, not a multi-stage correction.

This is the step described above as Machine Polish: a random-orbital polisher held on the hood, foam pad turning, polish still spread across the panel and dabbed up onto the cowl. It came off with an IPA wipedown before the coating went on.
One pass is a one-step polish. Whether a car needs one pass or three is the whole reason this service is quoted after we look at it rather than priced off a list.
