Getting Your Car Detailed When You Live in an Apartment

Short answer

It works, and a garage is often the best place to detail a car rather than a compromise. We are fully self-contained — we bring our own water and our own power — so no hose, tap or outlet is needed.

Two things to check first: your building's rules about contractors or car washing, and the height clearance if the garage entrance is low. Both are easy to sort out in advance and awkward to discover on the day.

Most of San Francisco lives in a flat with a shared garage or a building lot. This is how detailing works in that situation.

Why it is good

Why a garage is often better than a driveway

People apologize for their garage when they book. They should not — for several services it is genuinely the best environment available.

No sun on the panels. Working in direct sun is the enemy of every exterior process. Products flash off before they can be worked, water evaporates before it can be dried, and every droplet leaves a spot. A shaded garage removes all of that.

No wind. Wind carries dust onto freshly cleaned paint and onto wet coating. In the outer neighborhoods that is a real factor.

Weather independence. A garage is the difference between a coating appointment going ahead and a coating appointment moving. The 24 to 48 hour dry window after a ceramic coating is trivially satisfied under cover and forecast-dependent on the street.

Faster interior drying. A closed garage is warmer and stiller than an exposed kerb, which matters after extraction on a foggy day in the Sunset or the Richmond.

The one thing a garage sometimes lacks is space to walk all the way round the car. If your space is tight against a wall or a pillar, tell us — it is usually workable and it is better to know first.

Before booking

The four things worth checking

  • Building rules. Some buildings restrict contractors or explicitly ban car washing in the garage. A quick message to your building manager settles it. Most are fine, and the ones that are not usually allow work in an outdoor space instead.
  • Height clearance. Older San Francisco garages can be low. Tell us the clearance if you know it, or the make of any van you have seen get in. We would far rather plan around it than arrive and find out.
  • Access. Gate code, fob, doorman, or meeting us at the entrance for two minutes. Any of those work. A fob that has to be handed over is worth arranging in advance.
  • Your space number. Larger buildings have a lot of identical gray cars. The space number saves ten minutes of the appointment.
Situations

The common San Francisco setups

Private garage under the building

The best case. Covered, shaded, still. Ideal for anything with a cure or drying window.

Shared building lot, uncovered

Works well. Effectively a driveway. Weather applies as it would on the street.

Stacked or lift parking

Workable if the car can be brought down to ground level for the appointment. Tell us in advance.

Tandem space behind another car

Fine if the car can be moved out for the appointment, awkward if not. Worth flagging when booking.

Assigned street permit parking

Completely normal for us. Check street cleaning times for the day so the car is not towed mid-job.

Office parking structure

Works well — the car is stationary all day anyway. We need access details and any height limit.

Self-contained

What we bring, and why it matters here

Everything. Water, power, soap, machines, towels, products. Nothing is drawn from the building.

That is not a marketing line, it is the structural fact that makes the business possible in this city. Most San Francisco flats have no outdoor tap and no accessible outlet, and most garages have neither. A detailer who needs a hookup cannot work here at all.

For a standard interior, exterior or full detail, nothing at all is required from you or the building. For all-day work such as a ceramic coating or paint correction, access to a power outlet is helpful but not always required, and we confirm that when arranging premium services.

Waste water is managed as part of how we work — we are not leaving a flooded garage floor behind us, which is the specific thing building managers worry about when they hear the words 'car wash'.

If your building manager has questions, they are usually reasonable ones and we are happy to answer them directly. Text (415) 360-1964.

You do not need to be there

Most of our customers hand over a key or a gate code and go to work. We text on arrival, text if anything comes up, and text when it is done, and there is a walkthrough at the end if you are around.

An interior detail is 2 to 2.5 hours, a full package 3.5 to 5. There is no reason for that to be your afternoon.

Questions

Questions we get asked

Can you detail my car in an apartment garage?
Yes, and a garage is often the best environment for it — no sun, no wind, and weather independence. We bring our own water and power, so nothing is needed from the building.
Do you need access to a tap or an outlet?
No. We are fully self-contained for standard services. For all-day work like a ceramic coating a power outlet is helpful but not always required, and we confirm that when arranging it.
What if my building does not allow car washing?
Some do restrict it. Check with your building manager before booking, and if the garage is out we can usually work in an outdoor space or a street spot instead.
My garage entrance is low. Is that a problem?
Usually not, but tell us the clearance in advance rather than on the day so we can plan for it.
Do I need to be there to let you in?
Not for the whole appointment. A gate code, a fob, a doorman or meeting us for two minutes at the start all work.
