Mobile vs Shop Detailing in San Francisco | SF City Wash
SF City Wash Guide

Mobile Detailing or a Detail Shop? How to Decide in San Francisco

Short answer

If your car is parked somewhere we can reach it and you would rather not spend half a day driving it somewhere and back, mobile is the better format. If the job needs a covered indoor space for a day or more, or the forecast is bad and cannot move, a fixed location is the better format.

That is the whole decision. Everything below is the detail behind it.

SF City Wash is mobile only. We have no shop and no drop-off. We bring our own water and power to every job and work wherever the car already is, which in this city usually means a street spot, a residential garage, an apartment lot, or an office parking structure.

The comparison

What actually changes between the two formats

We have never run a shop, so we are not going to tell you what one charges or how quickly one works. We have no data on that and neither does anyone writing a page like this. What we can describe honestly is the structural difference: where your car is, who supplies water and power, and what happens when the weather turns.

What changes
Detailer comes to you
You take the car to them

Where the car sits

Mobile

It stays exactly where it is parked. Every SF City Wash job is done at the client address, in a driveway, a garage, a lot, or a street spot.

Drop-off

It sits at their location for the length of the job, and you arrange the round trip on both ends.

Drop-off logistics

Mobile

None. No drop-off, no pickup, no second car, no rideshare back. This is the part most people are actually buying.

Drop-off

Built into the format. Plan for two trips, or plan to wait.

Water and power

Mobile

We bring both. You do not need a hose, a spigot, or an outlet for a standard interior, exterior, or full detail. This is worth checking with any mobile detailer, because not all of them are self-contained.

Drop-off

Supplied on site, so it is never your problem or your question to ask.

Your time

Mobile

Most of our customers hand us a key and go about their day. We text on arrival and text again when the job is done. You do not have to be home or outside.

Drop-off

Tied to their hours and their location on both ends of the appointment.

How long it takes

Mobile

Interior runs about 1.5 to 3.5 hours, exterior about 1 to 3 hours, a full detail about 3 to 5 hours for a standard vehicle. The spread is mostly crew size. A two-person crew roughly halves the clock on a standard detail.

Drop-off

Add your travel time on both ends to whatever the work itself takes.

Weather

Mobile

We work outdoors, so rain is a real constraint on exterior work, paint correction, and coating. We watch the forecast and reach out to reschedule before the appointment rather than showing up in bad conditions. There is no penalty for a weather reschedule.

Drop-off

A covered indoor bay removes the weather variable entirely. This is the one genuine structural advantage of the format.

On timing: our own service pages currently quote slightly different windows for the same work, so the ranges above are stated wide enough to cover both. You get a specific window before we start, based on your vehicle and its condition.

Access

Where we actually work in San Francisco

The first question anyone in this city asks is whether the parking situation is going to be a problem. Usually it is not. These are the setups we work in regularly.

  • Street parking spaces. The most common one. We work off the curb side.
  • Residential garages. Single and tandem.
  • Apartment building lots and shared garages. We just need the gate code or a name at the desk.
  • Office parking structures. Plenty of our work happens while people are upstairs at their desk.
  • Driveways. The easiest version of all of this.

Give us the address or the neighborhood when you book and we sort out the access details from there. If there is something unusual about the spot, tell us up front and we will tell you honestly whether it works.

The setup

Self-contained, and why that matters more here than most places

In a city where a lot of people park on the street and a lot more park in a shared garage with no spigot, whether the detailer brings their own supply is not a technical footnote. It decides whether the appointment can happen at all.

We bring the water

Our own supply, on the truck, for every job. No hose, no spigot, and no borrowing from a neighbor.

We bring the power

Also on the truck. For a standard interior, exterior, or full detail you do not need to run a cord out a window or find an outlet in the garage.

The honest exception

For all-day work like ceramic coating or paint correction, access to a power outlet is helpful, though not always required. We confirm that with you when booking premium services rather than finding out on the day.

The limits

What mobile detailing does not solve

If a page only lists advantages it is a sales page, not a guide. Here is where the mobile format genuinely costs you something.

Rain stops the outside work

Light rain usually does not affect interior-only work. Exterior services, paint correction, and ceramic coating are a different story. We monitor the forecast and reach out to reschedule ahead of the appointment instead of showing up and hoping.

Rescheduling for weather costs you nothing. It does cost you the date, and in a wet stretch that can mean waiting.

Coating needs the car to stay dry after

A fresh ceramic coating needs 24 hours minimum before any water contact, 7 days before washing, and 2 to 4 weeks to reach full hardness.

On a street-parked car in San Francisco, that first 24 hours is a real scheduling problem. It usually means lining up covered parking, or lining up a dry stretch in the forecast, before we book the date.

Coating can run into a second day

A coating install takes 7 to 8 hours or more. On a larger vehicle, or when correction is done first, it becomes a two-day job. Day one is prep, decontamination, and correction. Day two is application and cure.

That is a lot of continuous access to your car and your parking spot, and it needs coordinating rather than just booking a slot.

Logistics

Do you need to be there?

No. This is the question we get most, and the answer is that most of our customers hand us a key and go back to whatever they were doing.

  • Access is the only real requirement. A key handoff, a lockbox, a doorman, or a gate code all work. Tell us which one when you book.
  • You get a text when we arrive and another when the job is finished. If something comes up mid-job, you hear about it then, not after.
  • We walk the vehicle before we pack up. If something is not up to standard we fix it before leaving. Most clients are not even outside when that happens.

If you would rather be there and watch the whole thing, that is completely fine too. Some people like seeing the before and after in real time.

Proof

Forty-five documented jobs, every one at the customer's location

We keep a photographed record of the jobs we can show. It currently stands at 45 vehicles across 22 areas of San Francisco, Pacifica, Daly City and San Mateo. None of them involved the customer driving anywhere.

Coverage

How far mobile reaches, and what the travel costs

A shop has one address, so distance is your problem. Mobile inverts that: distance becomes our problem, and past a point it has to show up in the price. Here is exactly how that works, with no surprise line item at the end.

The one job that changes the plan

Ceramic coating is where the format matters most

Plan it, do not just book it

Everything else on this page is a same-day appointment. Coating is not. It is the one service where being mobile changes the plan rather than just the address, because the car needs a dry window after application and the install itself can stretch across two days.

We still do it mobile, and we use Gtechniq. What we ask for is a bit of coordination on parking and timing up front. If you can put the car under cover for the first day, or we can find a clear stretch in the forecast, it goes smoothly.

Questions

Common questions about mobile detailing

Do you bring your own water and power?
Yes. We are fully self-contained for standard services. We bring our own water, soap, power, and equipment, so you do not need a hose or an outlet for a standard interior, exterior, or full detail. For all-day work like ceramic coating or paint correction, access to a power outlet is helpful but not always required, and we confirm that when booking premium services.
Do I need to be present during the detail?
No. Most of our customers hand us a key and go about their day. We just need a way to access the vehicle, which can be a key handoff, a lockbox, a doorman, or a gate code. We text when we arrive, keep you posted if anything comes up, and text again when the job is done.
Can you detail my car in an apartment garage or a street parking space?
Yes. We work in street parking spaces, residential garages, apartment building lots, office parking structures, and driveways. Tell us the address or neighborhood when you book and we will coordinate the access details from there.
What happens if it rains on my appointment day?
Light rain usually does not affect interior-only work. For exterior services, paint correction, or ceramic coating, rain is a real problem and we reach out to reschedule before the appointment. We watch the forecast and will not just show up in bad conditions. Rescheduling for weather carries no penalty.
Do you have a shop I can drop my car off at?
No. SF City Wash is mobile only. There is no shop and no drop-off. Every job we have documented was completed at the customer's address, whether that was a driveway, a garage, a parking lot, or a street spot.
How long does a mobile detail take?
An interior detail runs about 1.5 to 3.5 hours and an exterior runs about 1 to 3 hours, depending on crew size and how much buildup we are dealing with. A full interior and exterior detail is usually 3 to 5 hours for a standard vehicle, and longer for a large SUV or truck. We give you a time window before we start.
